Weight Management

Dr. Shadrach Smith and his team specialize in weight management. As a board-certified specialist in obesity and internal medicine, Dr. Smith focuses on the treatment of obesity as a disease, not as a character defect. The program manages the factors contributing to morbid obesity as well as the medical diseases that often accompany the condition. At Kansas Institute of Medicine, we take a whole patient care approach to weight loss. In turn, while improving overall health, patients learn about nutrition, diet and how to change lifestyle and eating habits.

Your treatment plan will be created specifically for your body type, your preferences, and your personality. Depending on the root cause(s) of the excess weight, your plan will include motivation and accountability through:

  • Self-Monitoring
  • Goal-Setting
  • Lifestyle Coaching (learning new non-food rewards, and stimulus control)
  • Nutrition (through an eating plan tailored for you)
  • Medications (both supplements and prescriptions to promote healthy weight loss)

Qualifying patients are overweight (BMI greater than 25) or obese (BMI greater than 30) adolescents and adults, age 16 or older. The main outcome focus is improving health risk factors through weight loss and thus improving fatigue, high blood sugars, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint pain.
